How to Prevent the Zika Virus from Reaching Your Rental Property in Winter Park

Zika in Orlando has a lot of people in the local area talking about prevention. It needs to be part of your Orlando property management plan as well.

Property Management Orlando: What is Zika?

Zika is a virus carried by mosquitoes, very much like the West Nile virus, and it’s transferred from person to person. The Zika virus causes coughing, fever, and general symptoms of discomfort and unrest. It is especially dangerous for women who are pregnant, older people, and women who may become pregnant. Infants can be born with Guillain-Barre syndrome and microcephaly. The virus causes birth defects and miscarriages. For adults, it causes fever, flu symptoms, and can put you in the hospital or make you sick and cause serious symptoms. As a Winter Park property management company, we have been proactive about getting information to tenants so they know what the virus is, how to prevent it, and what to do to take care of themselves.

Property Management in Winter Park: Preventative Measures

Wear long sleeves outside. Wear some sort of insect repellent or citronella or DEET so you’re not exposed to mosquito bites. Always go through your property prior to renting it out to make sure there isn’t any sitting water on the property. Go look at any flower planters that may be empty and turn them over. Remove empty tires, pots, recycling bins, or anything else that can collect water. Make sure there’s no place that a teaspoon or more of water can create a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Property Management Orlando: Mosquito Spraying

Reach out to local officials to find out when they are spraying, whether they’re doing it on a regular basis, and if there are other measures they are taking to protect the community. A happy tenant is a good tenant, and good tenants pay rent on time and stay in your property longer. Keep your tenant happy by providing information. Make sure they know you are looking out for them and their best interests.
Avoid mosquitoes, get rid of settled water on your property, and inform your tenants about the Zika virus. If your tenants are pregnant or may become pregnant, you really want to encourage them to protect themselves. This should be part of your relationship.
